Years ago when I went camping to climb iconic walls a friend introduced me to a female urination device. She told me there’s nothing better than being able to pee into a water bottle in your tent in the middle of the night. I was sold because honestly, I hate leaving my tent in the middle of the night!
She told me the Freshette was the way to go, but money was tight, so I went with a less expensive device. I watched BuzzFeed and YouTube videos on how to use it. I tried it in the bathroom and felt comfortable enough to use it outdoors, well indoors in a tent.
Fast forward to my trip to Hueco Tanks, Texas. I’m in my tent, water bottle is lined up under this cheaper version of the Freshette and…I peed all over my sleeping bag. It appears that I had mastered how to pee standing up, just not kneeling in a tent and I should have moved the sleeping bag out of the way. Lesson learned. After that I have NEVER peed in my tent, I’m too scared. But if it wasn’t all user error, I bought the Freshette when I got home.
This device is great when you are outdoors and there is no bathroom in sight. It is easy to use with you clothes on. You can unzip, place, and pee. It beats pulling you pants to your ankles, popping a squat, then having a family of four walk up the trail. MOON!
The Freshette comes in 2 parts, the part you urinate in and a funnel where the urine comes out. It’s collapsible for easy storage. The part you urinate into is deeper than the one I originally had. It’s easy enough to clean, rise it with water after each use and clean it with soap when you get back from your trip.
Overall, I’ve only had one mishap with this one and I’ve used it a lot over the years.
Pros: Females can urinate standing up without having to remove clothing. Good for being modest in nature and not touching the seat of a portapotty.
Cons: If you urinate too fast you may have an accident, but that can happen with any urination device.
