When I was a kid I thought camping was camping. It wasn't until my family had enough money to get a popup camper that I realized there were different types of camping. That was my first taste of glamping which is 100% my style. Of course my wife has a different idea of camping.
My daughter and I were watching Family Feud...
"We asked 100 women. If your husband asked you to go camping you would agree if the tent had blank"
My mind started rummaging through ideas like a television, air conditioning, a real mattress... Then my daughter said, "You wouldn't be able to answer that question. Mom would say, 'Camping? In the mud? With nothing but a campfire and a sleeping bag? Hell yeah! Let's bring the kids!'"
That is more my wife's style. But, because of her I have learned that there are many types of camping. There is car camping or tent camping which I had always thought was generic camping. There is walk in camping, glamping, backpacking, ultralight camping, winter camping, survivalist, bikepacking, and I am sure about a thousand more.
What we have realized is that so much of jumping into a new endeavor is research and learning. That is why Camplopedia is here. We wanted to take all those resources she sought out, all those advice groups, all those gear reviews... And collect them into a place where you can learn how to take up the hobby of camping without having to reach every corner of the internet.
Now, it is a big piece of pie to eat, but I think we can get there. Please, bare with me as we build the knowledge, starting at the beginning. Starting with what do I need to go camping?
